223 - At Long Last They Meet

The fact that my son has been watching Merrie Melodies every day for the past week is clearly making its way into the strip.

Anybody notice anything different about this strip?  It’s the first time that…

  1. MobiusZero Says:

My next guess that your planning to make a new character that would be the “Demon hunter” “Demon Slayer”?

um….is the prince only notice the demon JG?

  2. Ketill Says:

    …the prince speaks!

  3. Rosebud Says:

    … the prince has …

    teeth?
    a larger nose?
    pupils in his eyes?
    no rosy cheeks?
a daemon for his baby sister? :)

  4. Obsie Says:

anyone looks straigh to camera eg. no side silhuette

  5. JG Says:

Koseklump: Apologies!!! I think I accidentally marked your comments as “spam” instead of approving them! My bad and now I can’t find anyway to track them down. Please re-post!

  6. JG Says:

As for the rest of you: lots of good guesses. Some are correct (teeth) and others are wrong (Prince speaking, someone looking straight at the camera). There is still one that I am looking for…

  7. Karmacolic Says:

Is that a bed instead of a crib?

  8. Karmacolic Says:

    Nope, where’s the hippo?

  9. Rosebud Says:

Hopefully this gets posted on the correct strip’s comments…

The depiction of character motion (the demon gets up and down, the crown prince turns his head)? (Strip 212 features a flying book, but I did not consider that a character. :D)

Oh, cool, strip 169 talks about a demon child. Duh, duh, duh, duh!

I’m looking forward to all the misery she causes the Black Baron.

  10. Craig Says:

It’s the first time the demon says something!

  11. JG Says:

Rosebud: Motion? Hmmm, I’m pretty sure there’s been motion before. Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

Craig: Technically, does “Grrr” count as saying something?

  12. Fina Says:

hmm i donno what merrie melodies is but maybe the background is gone when the prince speaks? hehe he reminds me of tweety~

  13. JG Says:

Fina: I guess you’ll just have to google “merrie melodies” or search for it on wikipedia. I think you’ll find you were pretty close…

  14. Rosebud Says:

So my next guess would be: The first time the prince has any “normal” speech balloons.

    Nope.

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2007/11/19/141-say-hello-to-mr-d/

But it is the first strip I see that mixes the Prince’s thought balloons with speech balloons.

Oooh, here is his first tooth visible:

As for movement lines, okay, yes, you have movement by lines earlier. This is the first (prince jumping out of the crib for milk):

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2005/10/23/33-grrr/

    and first walking:

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2007/08/19/128-walking-backwards/

Note: I distinguish this from fluid in motion, as found here:

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2005/09/29/29-he-wont-even-know-im-here/

    and here:

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2006/03/12/53-diapers-lesson-1/

    Or sweat:

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2006/04/23/59-enough-with-the-plucking-puns/

    Or breath:

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2006/05/14/62-sleep-deprivation/

    Or capture after flight:

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2006/04/16/58-torturing-pigeons-in-the-dark/

And you have blurry movement, as here (baby eating, soldier stabbity):

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2006/12/10/92-beware-the-vortex/

But, from what I can tell, it actually is the first strip that depicts movement with the doubly crossed double lines you use in this strip. As well as the first to show head movement like that.

Of course, it sounds like you’re looking for something else…

  15. JG Says:

Rosebud: Wow. That is some thorough research! With all of that, it certainly takes the thrill out of my little thought.

The “first time” I had in mind was: I think it’s the first time I’ve used 5 panels in a strip. While I use 4 panels almost invariably, I’ve done 1, 2 and 3. Can anybody find a time I’ve used 5???

(I know, this is terribly anti-climactic after everything people have noted above and for that I apologize…)

  16. Rosebud Says:

Huh, I never counted the panels. :) I think this would count as five, though?

    This is more debatable:

  17. JG Says:

Rosebud: You are correct, the first one is definitely 5 panels. It just goes to show you that we can all learn something about this comic, even me!

  18. eMpTy Kay Says:

I know I am late to the guessing, but I thought it was the first time the prices crown came off his head.

Oh well, maybe next time I will be more attentive to details.

  19. Rosebud Says:

Hee hee. :) Well, you got me to reread the entire archive — a impressive work you’ve created!

@eMpTy: Regarding the crown coming off his head, take your pick…

    while moving

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2005/10/23/33-grrr/

    while still

    http://crownprince.bubonicpress.com/jg-bp2/2008/03/31/160-do-the-time-warp/

    Now, for extra bonus points…

In which strip did the most headgear jump off people’s heads?

  20. JG Says:

Oh! I know, I know! Or am I disqualified from these bonus points for any particular reason?

  21. Rosebud Says:

They’re not currently redeemdable, so sure, go ahead. (= Actually, my question was going to be, “Which characters that wear headgear have never had their hat or crown jump off their head?” It turns out that none of the guards (to my knowledge) or knight have had this happen yet, so that ends up being a larger number (including the super pigeon, which wears a helm in the Black Duke’s court).

The scene I did ask about does show one main character whose headgear has always stayed on, though. There’s one other in the cast page with that behaviour, as well, if you exclude the guards and knight.

  22. MobiusZero Says:

I remember the prince words are the same line of Tweety bird (looney toon )

  23. Hugo Says:

Well, this is the first time that a strip has more than 20 comments. Did I win ?
