159 - Time Sure Flies When You’re Having Fun
The tricky part about featuring a main character who ages is deciding how and when to change his “look”. I recently realized that the Crown Prince still looked the same as a newborn, despite the fact that he recently celebrated his first birthday. His look needed to reflect the older, mature boy he had become.
Let me know what you think of the new look. There are a few things that I already plan to slightly modify over the coming weeks. The fact is that if I don’t like his current look, I don’t need to worry too much about it because he’ll age and then it’ll be time to change his appearance once again!
For those of you who have been waiting over a year for the appearance of the Crown Prince’s younger sister, her arrival is just around the corner…

Thanks for the input gang! I wasn’t too sure about the cheeks, but you see the real-life prince often has very pink cheeks. I kid you not! So it’s as if I had NO CHOICE. But then again, he doesn’t ALWAYS have pink cheeks so he may not ALWAYS have pink cheeks in the comic. See what I did there? I gave myself an out.
As for the hair, it’s once again based on ACTUAL FACTS: the prince has brown hair (even light-brown hair in the summer) while my wife and I have DARK brown hair. It’s CRAZY and it makes me wonder if there is any sense of order in this whole wide world.

The pink I can live with - although I seem to recall it being a bit more diffuse! Maybe you could work on the shade? How about a nice dark red for when those molars are comin’ in? I’m wondering how he can go from baby to schoolboy so quickly? But wait a min … he did!!

Thanks SiL! For the next strip, I have in fact played with the shade of pink. We can continue this discussion after strip #160! By the way, don’t try to hide behind that clever “handle” - I know who you are!

If the prince old enough to go to grade school….who’s going to be his teacher? Not that old witch…
I bet that Knight will be his Combat teacher ( –, )
